Monteverdi's drama about the scandalous affair between Roman Emperor Nero and his ambitious mistress, Poppea, is a Baroque masterpiece. One of the first operas based on historical events, we may never know just how much of Poppea was written by attributed composer Monteverdi (there is no surviving original manuscript). However, this decadent tale of passion and political intrigue still resonates with modern audiences and features some of the most gorgeous melodies in opera.
Sung in Italian with English supertitles; conducted by Anthony Barrese.
